cool e28, how is it DD'ing a 20+ year old car in the cold? I'm going to be driving a e23 soon. Like, hopefully within 2 weeks soon

Thanks! It's a reliable machine. Despite its 355k miles, it starts every time and still drives well, no matter the temperature. I have found that when it gets to zero (or below) I have to crank for a long time, but it's never failed to start. Then again, I have a ridiculously oversize battery fitted.

I have the world's sketchiest tires on it now, snows are (still) on order. I get them installed Wednesday. Grrr.....

wow 355k miles? Its an M30 right? The e23 I'm picking up has... I think, slightly over 100k on the M106 and it always starts up in a snap, I heard the big six engines will last forever if you maintain them.

M30 it is. Rock solid engine, and tons of torque to boot.

slightly offtopic, you dont know of any good aftermarket headunit install guides do you? I figure the e23 / e24 / e28 / e30's all probably had the same radio harnesses. I need to replace the 27 year old slightly broken blaupunkt HU with an alpine and it seems the harness is going to take some splicing no matter what.

Mine already came with an aftermarket radio, but I replaced it since it was broken. I have a cheap JVC in now. It will take some splicing, but nothing too bad. Here's what I did, in a nutshell.

In the trunk, there is an amp for the rear speakers. Remove it, and splice the rear speakers into the old wiring going to the amp. There may not be enough wires, in which case you might have to pull new ones through. But there should be plenty you can re-use. You can sell the amp, throw it out, or keep it. Remember what color wires you spliced into. In the front, take off the speaker grills in the footwells and look for what color wires run to the front speakers and the itty-bitty tweeters that live in the doors by the mirrors (which are usually hooked into the same wiring as the front speakers). Remember those. Your head unit will come with a new plug. Even when I was swapping from one JVC to another, the plugs were different and I had to splice everything. Splice in the new plug by matching the wires listed in the manual to the ones you figured out in the car. Plug in the head unit, test it, and slide it into place. Replace all your panels. Done!

Good luck, and remember — it will get messy. Don't despair, they're just wires.

If you have any questions along the way, let me know and I'll see what I can do about helping you out.

If it snows here in Colorado more then a inch any time before I have a day off work..I ' m fucked -.- my snow car (65 beetle) has run into electrical issues, and I need a day off to sort them... so driving a 350Z on summer tires, witch isn't hooking up on dry roads since its 20 F, fun atm, but with snow, iuno how I'll get anywhere.

I have no idea. When I bought it, the center console looked like this:

Kinja'd!!!

Now it looks like this:

Kinja'd!!!

The only major difference in wiring was that I removed the rear amp so now the rear speakers work.

Also remember to bypass the fader knob. You don't need it with modern head units because they have four output channels, and so the sound doesn't need to be split. Leave it because it looks cool and it fun to play with, but don't connect it to anything.

do you have tweeters? I am no expert on this but I think thats how you'd know. I know on the e23's the premium sound cars had separate tweeters front and rear. I don't know if the standard audio has an amp, I'll have to look that up.

Also, I dig the CB clip haha

I have little tiny tweeters mounted to the doors way up by the mirrors. I don't think I have rear tweeters. Here's what my rear speakers (well, my windshield, but you can see the speakers) look like:

Yep, you have the premium audio. See the smaller grilles? Thats for the tweeters

that explains your amp, and my lack of said amp

my friend does have all the premium audio junk to install (sans the amp iirc). The whole reason he hasn't installed the headunit is because he realized like me that its going to be... a bitch.

Well, it's good that you don't need the amp because modern head units have built-in 4ch amps. Really, the install isn't hard. I think it only took 30 minutes or so, including figuring out wiring colors. Worst come to worst, you can pull new wires.

I like how the metra adapter on crutchfield has an adapter for like, 2 speakers, and nothing else.

I've never seen a headunit wired with like, spade connectors before. Even in the 80's, ford was using actual plugs. I am not very experienced in euro cars, let alone actual euro cars (grey market import), let alone 20+ year old all of the aboves.

Don't bother with adapters. Get yourself a wire cutter, soldering iron, and some heat shrink. Do it right once, never touch it again.
